meaningful music

1. Black Moth Super Rainbow – Born on a Day the Sun Didn’t Rise

I like the echoing percussion and the electronic voice. The strings do well to balance out the harshness of the drums and electronic effects.

2. Hanne Hukkelberg – In Here/Out There

A variation of the beat in the background has been in my head since I was about six years old. I don’t know why or how, but it’s pretty much always been there. I like the slow and persistent building to the very end, though I don’t like the ending.

3. Lisa Mitchell – Coin Laundry

I always wondered what it would be like to have a band based solely on noises made by the members’ mouths. I am somewhat closer to knowing what that would sound like thanks to this song. It almost sounds like a nursery rhyme.

4. Menomena – Wet & Rusting

Melissa introduced me to this band back when Annabeth and Chris had an apartment in midtown. At first it sounds like someone or something lurking and moves into the daylight. They’re right, you know, it is hard to take risks with a pessimist.

5. Miniature Tigers – Cannibal Queen

Cannibal Queen takes me back to my first Indie CD but this song is a little more upbeat.

6. Mirah – Generosity

Zach introduced me to Mirah. I really enjoy her heartfelt and raw music.

7. Passion Pit – Moth’s Wings

I don’t know if you can hear it, but I can in the first 24 seconds. AC/DC’s very much toned down and slower intro to Thunderstruck. (What a badass song!) The vocals are similar to that of Apes & Androids’ Radio, which was on my second Indie CD.

8. Polychromatic! – Good Enough

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

I’m thinking jungle + PlayRadioPlay! = Good Enough. I like this song because there aren’t enough lyrics to be distracting. It lets me concentrate on the music. Typically when I listen to a song, I have to listen to it a couple of times while focusing on the music and then a couple of times while focusing on the lyrics.

9. The Pragmatic – Academy

This song made me realize how much more I need to branch out. Anyone have any suggestions of new bands and/or blogs I can visit? Let me know in the comments.
